20,000 PV modules for solar greenhouse

Cultivating ginseng is no simple matter, this medicinal plant needs to be grown in protected greenhouses, which have considerable construction and maintenance costs. The Toulouse based company France Ginseng has risen to this challenge with the aid of photovoltaic technology,  and has opted to put its trust in SCHOTT Solar. Read on to find out more details on the successful concept implemented by the company.

The roofs of the greenhouses on the European ginseng farm in Seysses, in France’s Haute-Garonne region, have been equipped with 20,000 multicrystalline photovoltaic modules from SCHOTT Solar. The decision taken by the Toulouse-based company France Ginseng has two major benefits: Firstly, the modules supply shade and seal off the greenhouse against outside influences. Secondly the energy they produce is sold to the French electricity company EDF, securing funds for the company.

The PV modules are distributed across 15 buildings and greenhouses covering an area of 3.3 hectares, the system, with an output of 4.3 MWp, was put into operation in February of this year, with further projects for expansion of the company’s ginseng cultivation planned for the next few months.

France Ginseng’s decision to use modules produced by the German quality manufacturer was a conscious choice: the company was impressed both by the durability of the SCHOTT PERFORM™ Poly 220/225 modules and by their constant output and reliability.

SCHOTT Solar worked with its sales partner Solvéo Energie to implement the project. Pierre-Emmanuel Vergez, head of technical services at Solvéo Energie, explains: “The financial support brought in by the sale of the energy generated by the solar power system means farmers benefit from an income which helps them to fund their production and intensify their business activities.”
